Drummer, Tommy Campbell who has been living and working in Japan for a decade and a half has just recently returned to the US and will perform with his group Vocal-Eyes at the Hyatt Regency New Brunswick on December 11, 2013.
Campbell grew up outside of Philadelphia, steeped in a rich musical environment.
His father was a singer and an organist and his uncle was renowned Hammond B-3 virtuoso, Jimmy Smith.

Tommy attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston where he majored in instrumental performance
and went on to receive the college’s Distinguished Alumni award in 1998.
After leaving Boston, Campbell began a long tenure with Dizzy Gillespie which continued until Dizzy’s passing in 1993.
Inspired by legendary drummers like Buddy Rich, Max Roach and Art Blakey, Mr Campbell has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of jazz’s leading talents. In addition to Dizzy, Tommy has performed as a regular member of bands led by Sonny Rollins, John McLaughlin, Kevin Eubanks, the Manhattan Transfer, Jimmy Smith, Tania Maria, Gary Burton and a host of other jazz luminaries.
Tommy’s intelligent, exciting, stylistically authentic drumming
has established him  as a member of a new generation of Jazz Masters.
Dizzy Gillespie was not only a mentor but a key influence on Tommy’s Vocal-Eyes project.

The *VOCAL~EYES concept also stems from the years Campbell spent touring and recording with the Manhattan Transfer.  Campbell notes “A great vocalist IS a great musician!”
With deep roots in jazz, spanning the genre from traditional to progressive, Vocal-Eyes, a unique blend of voice and instruments is a must see and hear performance event.
